Thanks, Tim and Debra. I got my MA at Wayne State while working as a teacher in the junior high school I attended myself. Spent 46 years in education teaching from elementary to graduate school, and the premise here is totally correct. Brains can get some folks into ther "elite" schools, but too many admissions are based on legacies and contributions, not merit. And having worked in the gifted and talented field, I know the ways we ID the "gifted" are too narrowly defined as scored on culturally and socio-economically biased testing, not on a real look into the talent of individuals.
