Protective tariffs require short term pain in the form of increased immediate price increases. How long depends on the time required to tool up for production of the product under that stimulus. Major items today would require substantial time to build the industrial capacity needed and perhaps destroy the uncertain positive stimulus. Moreover, the availability of raw materials available at reasonable prices is a make or break issue for a protective tariff. Hence, for any critical product, a protective tariff would be a painful mistake. I have no confidence that Trump will pay attention to economists who actually understand understand the unintended consequences of his knee jerk notions.
