I don't see it at all. And "it" is both the shortage of food as a long-term issue and the shortage of garden supplies. Our economy is booming, with more jobs created in the last year than ever. And the economic stimulus has generated the increased demand for consumer goods, which led to the supply shortages when folks with extra funds went out an bought something at record levels. And workers who were finally fed up with low wages began to see they could quit and find a higher paying job elsewhere. This jumping from low to higher wages will drive the labor market for several months and perhaps a few years, but it does not mean a crisis in the food supply. Short-term disruptions, perhaps, but not real shortages.

For example, we need truck drivers. Here in NY I hear radio ads all the time from trucking companies promising drivers weekends at home, $70,000 annual salaries for experienced drivers, fringe benefits right away, and more. Older drivers are retiring, and the shortage of workers who want to sit long hours in a truck and suffer damaged kidneys from bouncing all day is a symptom of historically underpaid drivers and poor working conditions. As those conditions change, and that means across all the industries that are short on labor, things will ease up. And, now that economic stimulus has ended, folks will revert to more normal buying habits, thus lowering the demand for products. Shortages will ease and life will return to more normal. It's a complicated topic, but real food shortages are not going to be an issue in America.
