I am a retired 47 year teacher, school and central office administrator and university professor. You are totally on point. My fears include the rise of the far right Christian nationalists who want the destruction of public education, tax funded religious schools with no accountability for quality or content in what they teach, and the right to select/eliminate students and families who oppose a curriculum representing a distorted right wing Christian curriculum.
The strength of American education has been in the philosophy of teaching where everyone matters and open discourse is practiced. Your examples highlight the destruction of those ideals, created by the divisive forces of GOP conservative radicals. Our nation is now more divided as morality has been taken over by an early 19th and southern mindset. In my lifetime I saw that replaced by an inclusive educational consensus. That’s being replaced by radical religious exclusionism which, unchecked, will relegate American freedom to a history book that will also be banned. Democracy dies in darkness, and educators of our age are living that threat today. Thank you for your true observations.
